I Got This!
I Got This!
The Humbling of Needing Help
“Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time.” 1 Peter 5:6
When I was little, my mom used to read me a book called I'm Zoe! I Can Do it Myself. In this book, the little girl named Zoe makes it clear that she does not need help from anyone. She loves her independence.
Recently, I have discovered that I am like Zoe. I do not like accepting help from other people. I like to do things by myself. Even when I need help, I will refuse it and tell myself that I can do it alone.
In this verse, God is trying to teach us that we have to surrender our pride because we can’t overcome the trials in life by ourselves. God is saying that we must humble ourselves so that we can receive help from Him.
For me, this verse has helped me realize that I can’t fix the issues in my life by myself. I need to let go of my pride and show my brokenness. It is scary to do that sometimes, but this verse assures me that God will lift me up when I feel like I am at the bottom.
Thoughts for Reflection
When do you find yourself responding strongly that someone NOT help you with something?
What is it about that specific area of resistance that reveals your pride? How is calling you to repent and what might dependence upon Him look like instead?
